Information on Freelancing

A person who does not work for a company but who instead does contract work for them is considered a freelance worker.  He or she may work from home and get the work completed for another individual or company.

Freelance workers are usually referred to as independent contractors.  They are not employed by a company and do not receive benefits that a full time employee would receive.  There are many different fields that include freelance work.  The list includes but is not limited to:  music, journalism, publishing, screenwriting, filmmaking, cosmetics, fragrances, consulting, tour guiding, copy editing, proofreading, writing, website development, artists, and graphic design.

There is some freelance work that requires a freelancer to sign a contract and other work where there is only a verbal commitment involved.  Whatever the case may be, a person who chooses to do freelance work will only be successful if they do a good job in getting the work completed – in both quantity and quality.

If a person is not self-motivated and able to make themselves sit down and accomplish tasks, freelance work is probably not the field for them to go into, and individuals like to receive their work in a timely fashion.  A person who chooses to freelance should be able to make a schedule and stick to it.  It is a great idea for anyone who does freelance work to spend a few days working out of their home, in an office, or even a coffee shop or cafe so that they are able to focus without the temptation to do other activities.

When it comes to getting paid to complete freelance work, the payment is always different.  Individuals may get paid by the hour or day, or payment may even be based on a piece rate, or for example, how many pages of writing they complete.  If an individual chooses writing as their form of freelance work, they generally do not receive credit as the author for the writing that they are completing.  One benefit from choosing to do freelance work, is that workers are able to choose their own schedule and may have the opportunity to create work that they would not have the opportunity to complete in a regular working environment.

When a person chooses to do freelance work, they are able to create a portfolio that may be broader than just working in one field, and they will be networked with many different people who they may not have met if they had simply worked in an office setting.  When a person is a freelancer, they will usually work with multiple people at one time, completing different assignments.  These people must be trustworthy and they must be willing to revise or rework any work that is returned to them.
